We recently spent a few days at the Surf Song Bed and Breakfast on Tybee Island along the Georgia coast. Here is what you need to know before booking your stay.

Surf Song Bed & Breakfast Tybee Island Georgia
A beautiful turn-of-the-century historic home

My Surf Song B&B review might surprise you. My husband and I spent three nights there to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary.

It isn’t our first time at this B&B. We stayed there back in 2009 when it was called The Savannah Beach Inn with different owners. Our stay was so very relaxing and marvelous, we decided to go back.

The Inn

There are currently 5 bedrooms located on all three floors of this historic house. The third-floor room is a nice spacious suite.

The home is among a row of officer’s quarters built at Fort Screven in the years after the Civil War. It is believed to have been built somewhere between 1900-1904. The street running on the back side of the home is called Officers Row and this is where you will find parking while a visitor at Surf Song.

Starfish Room

We stayed in the Starfish Room and enjoyed our stay with one exception which I will share later.

Located on the second floor, the Starfish room has a very comfortable king-size bed with big fluffy pillows that reminded us of home.

The room

There are bedside tables on both sides of the bed which is especially nice to have. There are outlets behind each table so you can charge your cell phones.

I placed my makeup mirror on the bedside table and sat comfortably each morning to put on makeup.

We used the chest of drawers in front of the side window to place our toiletries bag as there wasn’t a place for it in the bathroom. It worked just fine since we also had the luggage rack from the closet, for our suitcase which we placed to the right of the fireplace.

The view

There are two east-facing windows that actually face the ocean. The ocean view is obstructed by a tall wooded area but you can see a glimpse of the ocean in the distance over the tree tops.

If a large ship comes by on the way into or out of the Savannah port, you will be able to see it as we did. The view from the room is still nice as it faces the spacious front yard.

The Bathroom

I would say the bathroom is adequate. There is a small cabinet on the wall behind the toilet with a little shelf. The closet is beyond the shower and rather a tight squeeze but plenty large.

You will find two fluffy white cotton robes in the closet to make you more comfortable if you like. Those are courtesy of the Innkeeper. A nice gesture.

Starfish Room shower

This is really the only place we would have a complaint which I did share with the Innkeeper and she said they do plan to remodel the shower.

The shower faucet faces the door. That means two inconveniences.

  1. Because the faucet faces the door, the water sprays out of the cracks in the door constantly making the floor flooded.
  2. You have to step into the little area completely out of the water to bathe yourself as your face or backside is almost completely against the glass while standing under the water.

The innkeeper said they were aware of the problem and plan to remodel but have had delays due to supply issues we have all been facing in recent years.

The Food

Breakfast is wonderful. The food is fabulous and Megan makes some of the best coffee you will enjoy. It’s fun to dine with the other guests and meet folks from other places. During our stay, we met several other couples also celebrating their wedding anniversaries.

Megan has made a video about breakfast and we did in fact enjoy this particular menu during our stay. We both loved it.

Surf Song dining room

As is the case with most B&B’s, there are snacks available in the dining room all day.

Megan sets out a different delicious dessert treat every morning. We indulged in those during our stay and loved the peanut butter and chocolate dessert bars. There is also water and canned drinks available for guests.

The Wrap Around Porch

The porch at Surf Song wraps around three sides of the house. As you come up the concrete steps from the back parking area, you enter onto the spacious porch. There is a flower garden to your left as you enter.

Lots of comfy outdoor furniture allows for some relaxing porch sitting. You will find pleasure in visiting with the other guests who are also relaxing on the porch in the evenings.

Enjoy your evening dessert snack at the small bistro table on the porch. It’s located in view of the swimming pool.

Beach Access

There is a path to the beach across the street from the Inn. It’s a pleasant one-block walk. Beach chairs and umbrellas are available on the porch on a first-come basis.

I do recommend wearing shoes to the beach as Mother Nature has left behind massive amounts of broken seashells on this end of the beach.

The Location

Surf Song is located on the north end of Tybee Island. You are within walking distance of the Lighthouse and the old Fort which you can tour.

The bike path is nearby. We rented bikes during our stay from a place that Megan recommended. The lady delivered them and picked them back up which was very nice.

There is a nice park with a walking path across the street from the backside of the Inn on Officers Row.

It’s a close drive to pretty much everything on the island you might enjoy doing on Tybee Island, so I’d say the location is excellent.

Would we stay again?

Yes, absolutely. The only thing we might do differently is to book our reservation far enough in advance to be able to get the suite on the third floor.

It is always good to read reviews prior to booking a stay anywhere. This Tybee Island Bed and Breakfast has great reviews on Trip Advisor as well as the 2022 Travelers award from Trip Advisor.
